Disney College Program: Applications and Acceptances. In the last installment of this column I introduced myself and what the Disney College Program (DCP) is, so I figured in this one I would talk about getting into the program. A step by step guide to the application process, with some tips and an insider’s view. I want to break it down to the four major stages of the entire process; there is the online application, the web based interview, the phone interview, and the waiting game. Each has multiple steps, but if this is your dream, it will be easy- peasy. Disney College Program Fall 2012 BlogspotThe online application is basically like any other online application, putting in your basic information, yada yada yada. Make sure to list all previous work history that can help you in this field of work. For instance, I volunteered at an aquarium and this brought me some major communication skills, so I listed it, and sure enough, later on in my phone interview we discussed it and how it would help me in Disney. Do the application as soon as you are comfortable, or as early as your school will let you. Make sure to talk to your advisor at your college or university about the program before you apply, because if you do get accepted there are fees that you have to pay, and you don’t want to pay just to find out that you can’t attend the program because you needed to take another class first. The web based interview is a very detailed interview, consisting of questions that deal with anything from situational work questions, to how much you like to “party”? This part of the process can be very tricky, you need to pass this interview to move on any further, and most of the questions are on a scale, basically do you agree or disagree, or somewhere in between. I had questions that were about If i liked to work in a neat environment, to how often I prefer to hangout with my friends. When you are answering the questions in this section be really honest. Toward the end of this interview you will select which roles you are interested in! This part is very exciting! This is your chance to research the roles, they list them all out and give you detailed information about each one. Know that if you want to be a character performer (friends with a character) you must go to auditions. Fair warning they can be a bit of a travel for some. The closest one to me was 4 hours away by train. Select the roles you will be willing to do, don’t select more for a better chance of getting accepted. It doesn’t work like that. If you will not be happy being in a custodial role, do not select it as a choice. On the off chance that you get it and won’t be happy, it really isn’t fair to someone else who would happily have taken that position. The phone interview is where a lot of people get nervous, but honestly it is one of the best parts of the entire experience. There are many approaches to how to make your phone interview as easy as possilbe. Personally I was laying in bed in my sweat pants with my notebook and pen ready. Other people like to wake up early, dress professionally and sit at a desk, just be comfortable and ready to answer any question thrown your way. In preparation for the phone interview, do some research! There are many blogs all over the internet that have lists of possible questions. Read over them, jot down some notes, and practice them a few times, but DO NOT have a script to read from, it will only jumble you up. You want the interview to be as natural as possible. Be ready for your phone interview at least an hour before your scheduled time, have a bottle of water handy, and don’t forget to smile! It comes across in your voice if you are smiling, even a forced smile. Be confident, not cocky. When you get your phone call, write down your interviewers name, its always nice to have it handy, there will be a brief introduction, and right after that it will basically be like talking with an old friend. From personal experience, both of my interviewers were really nice and made me feel really comfortable. I even stopped myself and apologized for rambling because of my nerves, they laughed with me and said that it was normal and that I was doing great. You will be asked what your top three roles are, make sure you have done your research on them because you will be asked about them. Show that you are paying attention, it is okay to have a conversation with your interviewer! At the end of your interview make sure you ask questions, some default ones are how did they get started with disney, or how long have they been with the company, but make it personal. Remember that you are trying to sell yourself, show that you really are interested. The biggest question you need to prepare for is, “Why do you want to do this program?” Honestly, this can be the hardest question to answer. You have to set yourself apart from everyone else, but you also want to show how badly you want this job. I ended up talking to my interviewer for about 5 minutes on this question alone. Finally, if you get through the first three stages you start playing the waiting game. Rule of thumb here is to not call recruiting right away after your phone interview. I know it will be hard, some people get accepted within two days, others have to wait months. Just out of common courtesy, I waited a month to call recruiting to check the status of my application. Luckily I called because there was a hold on my account, but they were very helpful and I was accepted a week after i called. There is a time period that they can hold you in pending for up to a few months. If you are NLIC then you have been denied for this semester, but if this is your dream, do not give up on it. Try again next time applications come out. If you are a restricted rehire, you will have to fill out paperwork. This is normally for people who have done the program before but left early, or had some complications form their last time working with the company. If you are waiting, just sit back, relax, and try to focus on your school work. You will thank yourself later. If you are accepted, join the Facebook groups, make some friends, find some roommates, then leave them. If you decide to stay there will be some drama, just stay clear of it and you will be fine. Again, if you are accepted, now is the time to book your flight (unless you are driving, which is highly recommended) and hotel. Then make sure every thing is squared away with your school. That is basically it! In a condensed form it doesn’t look like much, but trust me there are a lot of details to the process, but looking back it goes by really quickly! If you are thinking about applying for the program, I highly recommend it. Just the interview process alone is very insightful and very professional. On another note, I am flying to Orlando on Monday, May 1. We will be resort hopping for two days, and then I move in. So be on the look out for more updates to the column on Walt’s Kingdom. Side Note: If you are applying for Fall Advantage or Fall know that you will most likely be working on Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other holidays towards the end of the year. Another Side Note: The column finally has a name, Bry’s Life In The World! Now Accepting Applications! This varies by school, so please check with a faculty member to see if you are eligible to participate in the program. Candidates must be at least 1. Candidates must also have unrestricted work authorization in the United States. To Apply: Note: Candidates will receive an update regarding the status of their applications no later than November 1.
